8(a)? Is it worth it?

With promises of golden coins falling from the sky I use to help people achieve their 8(a) certification. Having seen only a few prosper in the minority federal contracting game, the following is my conclusion of minority certification. Fifteen percent of 8(a) contractors do eighty percent of the 8(a) business. Pursue it only if your business is already receiving federal business. Minority certification will not instantly open doors or make the phone ring. Truly, minority certification is like chasing any other market segment. It takes time, effort, and understanding all to do one thing – build relationships. Once those relationships are made, then 8(a) (or HUBZone) will help those who desire to do business with you, to do business with you. Your minority certification only helps your customers, not you, do business with you. Therefore, is the federal, state, city, etc. already customers of yours? If not, focus on getting that business first. The effort it takes to achieve 8(a) certification, will be better utilized gaining federal businesses first. Then ask your customers if you having 8(a) would help them do business with you. If it would, not only is that your green light, but you just drew your customer closer to you.
