MBDA National Director David A. Hinson
President Obama’s administration has named a new head for the Minority Business Development Administration. David A. Hinson has been placed as the new MBDA National Director replacing Ronald Langston. Personally, I have been anxious to see who would be chosen to the lead the MBDA in the new administration.
Not knowing much more than what the biographical synopsis has said about David Hinson, what can be gleaned is that he should be strong in financials but weak in other categories an entrepreneur may encounter. Mr. Hinson seems to have no business development background nor government contracting. Considering in the same press release announcing his appointment the Department of Commerce mentions its assisting in $2 billion dollars in contracting, some obvious experience with contracting should be evident. This is one of the strongest services that the MBDA can provide, contracting assistance. Helping minority owned businesses leverage their minority status for government (local, state, federal) or corporate (diversity) contracts.
Of course, Hinson will not be doing the one-on-one’s with businesses, but he must be a spokesman and advocate within the government for minority contracting. That was something his predecessor excelled in. However, he may be the right man at the right time.
At any other time I would say there are plenty of business development services that already provide financing assistance- SCORE, SBA, PTAC, and numerous local business development centers. However, with capital and credit being tight, someone with a strong finance background may be able to open new avenues for business loans for minorities. However, it is not just knowledge but connections. Can he build a network in and out of the federal government that will assist MBE’s?
